Letter of Thanks to All Members

Dear friends and members of the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia:

Greetings!

In keeping with the arrangements from the Head Office of the Bank of China, I will shortly be taking on a new role and I will no longer be in the position of Country Head and General Manager of the Sydney Branch of the Bank. Therefore I will no longer be serving as Chairman of the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia and Chair of the Sydney branch. On this occasion – on my departure - I would like to express my wholehearted thanks to the Embassy (and consulates) in Australia, the Economic and Commercial Office (and sections), who have constantly shown their care and guidance to the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia and myself personally; I thank all of the directors of the Chamber of Commerce for their understanding and support to me, and I thank all members - my friends - for your significant care and tolerance!

I took on the role of Chairman of the China Chamber of Commerce and Chair of the Sydney branch buoyed by the trust and confidence of members on 29 August 2012. In the more than five years since, we have met together at the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia and all of us from different backgrounds and with varied experience have overcome many challenges. We have shared constant ambitions and made one achievement after another with a growing reputation.

We have reached new heights in how we have conducted ourselves in these five years. The Chamber of Commerce has, with the cordial support and effective guidance of the Embassy (and consulates) in Australia and the Economic and Commercial Office (and sections), consistently embraced the mission to ‘build a platform for exchange and to promote joint development’ and we have continually strengthened our development. We have upheld compliance work including revisions to the Chamber of Commerce’s Constitution and formulation of the ‘financial management system’. We have been dedicated to strengthening the establishment of the Secretariat, and in consistently raising service standards. With the combined efforts of its broad membership, the Chamber of Commerce continues to grow and develop and the number of members in the four branches: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth now totals 327 as of the end of October 2017 - a sixfold increase on the 54 members at our founding. The Chamber of Commerce has also established a Legal and Compliance Committee, Aviation Professional Committee, Resources and Energy Committee, Women Entrepreneurs Committee and Foreign Relations Committee to better provide compliance and professional services to member companies. The Chamber of Commerce has now initialised multiple platforms that are structurally complete and functionally well-equipped to lay a strong foundation for the next step in our development.

We have also reached great heights in terms of promoting dialogue in these five plus years. The Chamber of Commerce has been a consistent promoter of stronger dialogue between member organisations and Australian governments and business circles, helping members to plant themselves in fertile Australia and helping Australians to acquire greater and stronger knowledge of Chinese companies. The Chamber of Commerce has organised talks and exchanges of ideas between member organisations and the Australian community on multiple occasions on themes such as economic and trade partnerships between China and Australia, the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, and Australia’s investment environment particularly since the two countries established their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership relationship and signed the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, serving to strengthen and enhance understanding. In particular, the Chamber of Commerce compiled the book ‘Chinese Investment in Australia’ to help our Australian friends gain a deeper understanding of China and Chinese businesses in Australia. It paints a vivid picture around the investments undertaken by member organisations in China and Australia and their mutually beneficial partnerships. The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Turnbull, has prefaced the book in a powerful display of the high degree of recognition in which the work of the Chamber of Commerce is held in promoting dialogue between China and Australia.

We have also reached new heights in boosting our contributions in the subsequent five years. On the one hand, member organisations have seized the opportunity afforded by the rapid development in economic and trade cooperation between the two countries to consistently grow and strengthen their Australian operations and have worked hard to repay stakeholders, epitomising the richly beneficial, win-win partnership between China and Australia; on the other hand, the Chamber of Commerce has also been committed to putting its qualities on display and enhancing its image in various ways. We held sumptuous 10th anniversary celebrations on the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Chamber of Commerce, exhibiting to all in Australian government and business circles the fine standing in which the Chamber of Commerce member organisations find themselves, giving members great occasion for pride in an enormous step forward for the image of the Chamber. Not only this, but the Chamber has also enthusiastically taken up the mantle of social responsibility in its participation in Australian charitable endeavours. It is particularly worth noting that the Chamber of Commerce’s charitable foundation was formally established this year, and it shall be proactively taking part in local Australian charitable projects.

This season must come to an end. I am happy and grateful for your presence in my life and hope for it to continue. Let’s keep looking to our original aims, with tasks close to our hearts as we progress forward. I believe that the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia will most definitely enjoy a wonderful future!

I wish you all the best of luck, good health, good fortune in your endeavours, and joyful lives!

Chairman of the China Chamber of Commerce in Australia
Hu Shanjun
